The Magical World of Embroidery, Christian Dior Couture

christian-dior-couture-atelier-vermont-embroidery-details-flowers-style-2013-4Last summer it was announced that Christian Dior Couture acquired the Vermont embroidery ateliers which were founded by Jean Guy Vermont in 1956. The next two haute couture shows that have followed, the fall 2012 show and the very recent spring 2013 one, have been a delightful expression of what these French ateliers master,  which is the art of handmade embroidery. “Here, everything is done by hand, from the first drawing on tracing paper to the transformation of beads, sequins, silk and organza, for the embellishment of Raf Simons’ designs. The work is exceptionally minute, so that each thread, each sequin is in exactly the right place. Hands do everything”.The online Dior Magazine has published a collection of “behind the scene” pictures, close-ups of embroidery details and the process of sewing.

Based on a modern perspective of the couture concept, Raf Simons has created a collection that centers around the idea of flower-women .There are heavenly handmade dresses, corsets and jackets that abound in thorough embroidery detailing. In this case, the flowers, the sequins and the beans are a magical tool for the house’s creative designer who creates a  fairy storylike atmosphere. The setting was carefully aligned to the positive and joyful theme by Bureau Betak.

The 2013 SAG Awards – The Outfits

To get straight to the point, my favorites of the night were Marion Cotillard and Naomi Watts. They are the first that come to my mind when I think about last night’s red carpet appearances. Naomi Watts looked stunning in a white Marchesa strapless gown. The fact that she kept the styling simple, made it  look classic and sophisticated. Marion Cotillard wore Christian Dior as usual. The design of the dress really worked out for her. I like it and I also like the fact that, despite wearing the same brand over and over again, Marion always manages to show us a new approach of the look. Julianne Moore, Amanda Seyfried and Kerry Washington looked very elegant as well. I’d also add Nina Dobrev and Jennifer Garner on this list. Jennifer, who doesn’t take risks when it comes to choosing the dress for the red carpet but neither does she make big mistakes, opted for a sheer gold Oscar de la Renta dress.

Jessica Chastain was another pleasant appearance on the red carpet. Her Alexander McQueen dress is definitely an improvement from what she has worn this awards season. Her dresses have been so lackluster, I believe she deserves to make a great comeback.

Sometimes the dresses, as presented on the runway, don’t look so good on the red carpet. For example, as much as I love Giambattisa Valli, Anne Hathway’s look did not impress me. The most disappointing was undoubtedly Jennifer Lawrence. The design looked completely wrong…it just looked like a cloth wrapped around her body. Just because it’s tagged Dior doesn’t mean it is good.
